Although it is not well known, exolymphatic fistula is a very common hearing loss. A diagnosis of exolymphatic fistula can only be made by cutting the eardrum and looking inside, so a firm diagnosis is not often made. Symptoms can be similar to those of sudden hearing loss, Meniere's disease, whiplash, or cerebrospinal fluid hypovolemia, so it is often mistakenly treated. External lymph fistula often improves with acupuncture, so acupuncture is recommended for sudden hearing loss that does not improve with steroids.
